National NGOs include organizations such as the Red Cross, professional organizations etc. Some of these have state and country branches and assist local NGOs. A national NGO wishing to establish cooperative links with UNESCO can also seek to affiliate to an international NGO which already maintains official relations with UNESCO.

It can thus enjoy official links with the Organization by affiliation, which helps it in its contacts on the national level.

The World Bank defines a non-governmental organization (NGO) as “private organizations that pursue activities to relieve suffering, promote the interests of the poor, protect the environment, provide basic social services, or undertake community development”.[1] An international non-governmental organization (INGO) has the same mission as a non-governmental organization (NGO), but it is international in scope and has outposts around the world to deal with specific issues in many countries.
