FCRA stands for Foreign Contribution Regulation Act. An Ngo is applicable to receive funds from abroad if it has an FCRA certificate. In order to get an FCRA certificate, the Ngo should be three years old.


Government of India and foreign funding agencies releases a lot of funds for the welfare of the underprivileged section of the society. These funds are given on a periodic basis to those non-profit organization who has FCRA certificate. However, such funds are not properly utilized by many of such organization. There are lots of projects to be run by United Nations Organization (UNO) in India. UNO focuses on giving grants to those organization who has done good work in uplifting the poor section of the society. The first important aspect to get an FCRA registration is that your NGO must be three years old. The second most important aspect to get FCRA registration is that you must have spent a minimum of 10 lakhs rupees in the last three years under the social expenditure clause to get FCRA certificate. Once you have these two criteria, you are applicable to receive FCRA certificate. Afterwards, you can apply for FCRA online through their website. There will be a verification of your work from the IB department and once they approve your NGO and its work, you get FCRA certificate for the next five years. After the completion of five years, you need to renew the FCRA registration for another five years. You will only get a renewal if Government authorities finds your work commendable and genuine.

Foreign funding has become an integral part of Indian society of NGO sector. But getting foreign funds is not that easy as it is supposed to be. Government of India has blacklisted a lot of NGOs for taking funds and doing no work. In a nutshell, if you don’t do work, you won’t get any funds. NGO is made for serving the society and if you serving yourself, it can be harmful to the existence of your NGO. Your NGO registration can be cancelled and you can also have to face a lawsuit from the Government of India.
